THE GARDEN OF EDEN

Landscape

Christians believe that death is only the beginning of life everlasting. A sowing of seed into the afterlife, so to say. Why then must a resting place be dismal and hopeless? The architect's challenge this with the design of the cemetery grounds at Sonalur. Landscape is meticulously worked out with careful consideration of native trees to reduce water consumption over a vast area of land.

A retreat centre is placed in a corner of the site and this is surrounded by what can only be called The Garden of Eden. With kiosks, pools, fountains, pergolas and lush vegetation planted around, it is a reminder that, even beauty such as this is simply a snippet of things to come. The retreat centre itself is designed to be a light weight structure reminiscent of a cocoon whose symbolism is two-fold - life on earth is temporary and the idea of metamorphosis - transformation of life.
